Xander Kok-Roberto | Jazz Guitar Student
This page documents the musical development and progress of my jazz guitar student, Xander Kok-Roberto.
Here I share selected lesson videos, performance clips, and musical milestones that reflect his growth as a guitarist and improvising musician.
Our work focuses on developing core jazz guitar skills: harmony, improvisation, rhythm, repertoire, technique, and practical musicianship — with the goal of building a strong musical foundation and artistic independence.
Lesson Video #1 — “Airegin” by Wes Montgomery
In this video, Xander and I play “Airegin” by Wes Montgomery.
As part of this project, Xander transcribed the entire solo by ear and learned it by heart — an important step toward developing real musical understanding, stronger ears, and deeper connection to the jazz language.
This is a typical lesson format at Groningen Guitar Lab: the student presents prepared material, we work on details and weaknesses, and finish by making music together.
